Artist of the week: Lisa Medvedeva

This time around i present you a russian photographer - Lisa Medvedeva ;) I got acquainted with her work with the little help of vk.com and i thought it was only a matter of time for this blog-entry.

Меня зовут Лиза, мне 23 года, я родилась в городе Петрозаводск, республика Карелия. В сентябре 2012 года переехала в Санкт-Петербург и живу здесь по сей день. Мое главное хобби и смысл жизни – фотография. Но также я увлекаюсь графическим дизайном, дизайном интерьера, архитектурой, люблю путешествовать, знакомиться и общаться с людьми. My name is Lisa, I'm 23, I was born in Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia. In September 2012 moved to St. Petersburg and live here to this day. My main hobby and the meaning of life is photography. But also, I enjoy graphic design, interior design, architecture, traveling, and i love meeting new people. If you could only use 3 words, how would you describe yourself? Лето, энергия, оптимизм. Сейчас как-то так. Summer, energy and optimism. Something like that. It's most suitable for this moment.  You have a remarkable talent for capturing portraits. When did you first tried yourself at & got interested in photography? У тебя особый талант к портретам. Когда ты стала увлекаться фотографией?  Я стала увлекаться фотографией 6 лет назад, когда начала учиться в университете и у нас дома появилась первая камера, цифровой Canon PowerShot. Родители поручили мне разобраться с его настройками, и я тренировалась на цветах и домашних животных, пока мне это не наскучило и я перешла фотографирование своих университетских друзей. Это оказалось весьма интересно, мы гуляли по городу, фотографировались и дурачились, и тогда я поняла, что мне интересно снимать людей, ловить их эмоции и выражение лица. Так меня и затянуло. Кстати, тот самый первый Canon до сих пор есть у нас дома, им пользуются родители, а я уже поменяла свою третью камеру. I became interested in photography six years ago, when I started studying at the university and my family bought the first camera, a digital Canon PowerShot Pro. My parents asked me to play around and figure out  its settings, and I trained on flowers and pets. When I got bored, I started taking photos of  my university friends. It was very captivating, we walked around the city, took pictures and fooled around, and then I realized that I was interested in taking pictures of people, catching their emotions and facial expressions. By the way, the very first Canon is still  at home, it belongs to parents,whereas i have already changed my third camera. Are you studying photography and want to work as a professional photographer in the future? Ты обучалась, обучаешься фотографии и хочешь заниматься этим на более профессиональном уровне в будущем? Практически всему, что я умею сейчас, я научилась методом проб и ошибок. Никакие курсы я не посещала и в фотошколах не училась. Посетила несколько мастерклассов известных фотографов, да и то только за последнее время. Когда началось мое увлечение, зеркальные камеры не были так доступны, как сейчас, да и фотографией в то время занималось не так много людей, и я просто не знала, к кому обратиться за советом. Поэтому я заходила на свой тогда любимый DeviantArt и просто пыталась сфотографировать и обработать «похоже» на те работы, что там были выложены. Получалось все далеко не сразу, но даже с тех времен остались работы, которые мне нравятся до сих пор. Almost everything that I can do now, I have learned through the method of trials and errors. I’ve never attended courses and never studied in photography schools. Attended several workshops of known photographers, but even those only happened recently. When my passion towards photography kicked in, SLR cameras were not as available as they are now, and not too many people were engaged in photography at the time. I just did not know who to turn to for advice. So I opened my favorite DeviantArt and just tried to take pictures  and edit them  like those photos that were uploaded on the sit. Not all the pictures turned out nicely at first, but I still have a few of the works that are still my favorite and that were taken in those years. What equipment do you use? Твоя экипировка?) Я снимаю на Canon 5D Mark II, и очень им довольна. Это моя первая полноформатная камера, и я долго шла к ее покупке, поснимав перед этим на Canon 450D и 40D. Любимый объектив, конечно, «полтинник», для меня это универсал в портретной и трэвел-съемке, ни на что его не променяю. Так же снимаю на 35 mm f/1.4L, очень резкий и быстрый объектив, удобен для свадеб и мероприятий, а также при не очень благоприятных условиях съемки. В планах приобреcти тилт-шифт объектив и 135 mm, очень нравится у него боке. I shoot on Canon 5D Mark II, and i am very pleased with it. This is my first fullframe camera, and I worked my way up for a long time to buy it, after trying different cameras like Canon 450D and 40D. My favorite lens, definitely, is the 50 mm, for me it is useful in both portrait and travel shooting. I cannot  just simply give it up. Also, i use a 35 mm f/1.4L, very sharp and fast lens, suitable for weddings and different activities and for not very favorable shooting conditions. Planning to buy myself a tilt-shift lens and 135 mm lens. I am simply in love in its bokeh. Do you work with models or your friends? Do you just let them be or instruct them of what you want them to do? Ты работаешь с моделями или с друзьями? Ты просто даешь им свободу во время сьемки или четко даешь указания (как позировать. как встать) Работаю со всеми. Все люди разные и в этом вся прелесть каждой съемки. Бывает просто работать с моделями и с друзьями, и наоборот. Человека могут стеснять различные факторы (погода, прохожие, боязнь камеры, неудобная одежда, плохое настроение и тд), но я стараюсь настроить человека на позитивный лад, раскрепостить, рассмешить, потому что живые эмоции и естественная поза  - это то, что делает снимок красивым. Скованность и замкнутость будут сразу видны на фото. Но я в любом случае подскажу, как встать и куда посмотреть, если это необходимо. I work with everyone. People are different and it is a special charm of every shooting. Sometimes it is simple to work with models and with friends, and sometimes not. A person may be confused by various factors (weather, passers-by, camera fear, uncomfortable clothing, bad mood and so on), but I’m trying to lighten him or her up in a positive way, make them relax, laugh. Pure emotions and comfortable pose is that something that makes a beautiful snapshot. Stiffness and isolation will be visible on the photo without a doubt. But I will give an advice about posing and say where to look at, if necessary. Before clicking the shutter do you have a clear concept in your head of what it is you are trying to capture? Перед тем как сделать фотографию у тебя есть четкое представление того что ты хочешь поймать на кадр? Когда как. Иногда я вижу, как будет выглядеть снимок, какое на нем будет настроение и как я его обработаю, но часто бывает так, что я просматриваю потом фотографии со съемки и мне нравятся совершенно другие, порой просто случайно снятые  кадры. Sometimes I see how the picture will look, which mood it will have and how I'll handle it, but it happens so often that when I look at pictures from the shooting - I like radically different, sometimes just a random shots. Where do you get your inspiration? Где ты находишь вдохновение? Вдохновение я ищу, как ни странно, в работах других фотографов, в музыке, кинофильмах, книгах, журналах, в простых прогулках по улице, путешествиях и, конечно, в самих людях. I look for inspiration  in the works of other photographers, music, movies, books, magazines, in simple walks along the street, travel and, of course, in the people. What kind of a role does music and literature play in the process? Какую роль играет музыка и литература в этом процессе? Музыка и литература создают образы, которые я хочу воплотить в жизнь. Правда, что касается музыки, то под нее я обычно представляю, как снимаю видеоклип, а потом из него вырезаю отдельные кадры и чаще всего они черно-белые. После прочтения какой-либо книги возникает желание воссоздать скорее не образ, а какую-то сцену из нее, с декорациями и костюмами, и при этом передать в фотографии атмосферу, которая в книге выражена словесно. Music and literature create the images that I want to implement. Music wise, I usually imagine how I make a music video, and then carve the individual frames from it and most often they are monochrome. After reading a book, I have a desire to recreate not an image, but a certain scene out of a book, with decorations and costumes. Also I want to transmit the atmosphere in the pictures, which is expressed verbally in the book. Any photographers & artist you look up to? Какие нибудь фотографы, художники которыми ты восхищаешься? Are there certain things you haven't tried yet (photography wise) and are looking forward to do in the near future? Есть какие-нибудь стороны фотографии которые ты не опробовала но обязательно хотела бы в будущем? Хочется попробовать все, что еще не попробовано. Ню, фэшн, реклама, кто знает, может быть я найду себя в чем-то еще. I want to try everything that I haven’t. Nude, fashion, advertising, who knows, maybe I'll find myself in something else. What do you do when you have inspiration withdrawal, anything isn't going the way you want it to? Что ты делаешь когда тебе не хватает вдохновения, все получается не так как ты хочешь? Я отдыхаю и пытаюсь понять, что я делаю не так или почему у меня что-то не получается. Пытаюсь найти вдохновение в чем-то еще. Иногда понимаю, что, как ни старайся, прийти к намеченному результату не получится, и что либо стоит что-то изменить в средствах достижения этого результата (технические средства, методы обработки, новые модели или локации или все вместе), либо попробовать что-то совершенно новое, и, быть может, все получится гораздо лучше, чем я ожидаю. I relax and try to understand what I'm doing wrong or why I can't do something. Trying to find inspiration in something else. Sometimes I understand that I cannot get the intended result, and that I either must change something in the means of achieving the result (technical means, methods of treatment, the new model or locations or all together), or try something completely new, and, perhaps, everything will turn better than I expect. What is the one thing that makes you different from everybody else? Есть что то что отличает тебя от всех остальных? Мне сложно об этом судить, потому что каждый смотрит на мои работы по-разному и каждый в них находит что-то свое, и я хочу чтобы люди, с которыми я работаю и те, кому просто нравится мое творчество, решали для себя, чем я выделяюсь среди остальных фотографов. I can't judge it, because everyone looks at my work differently and everyone finds in it something special, and I want the people with whom I work and those who simply love my work to decide what distinguishes me from the other photographers.
